Lacquered Furniture - Black Armoire and White Console

I hope everyone had an awesome Easter and I hope you are finally enjoying some warmer weather where you are. I enjoyed some down time but am back painting full speed ahead! Here's a few completed pieces that are shipping to Vermont this week.
I'm sure you've all seen the lacquered furniture that is becoming increasingly popular these days. I had black lacquered furniture in the late 80's. Black is popular today but the bold, bright colors are really trending. I recently had a request to lacquer a few of  pieces I had in my Etsy shop. One to transform into a white console, the other piece to transform into a black armoire. I thought they turned out awesome.

I let a trusty cabinet guy spray lacquer them for me. The client wanted bright gold hardware so, I transformed the existing hardware with gold leafing. I used a metal spray primer and hand applied the leafing adhesive using a small brush. They do make an adhesive spray but I find it a bit messy. You can also use gold metallic spray paint but in my opinion nothing compares to the sheen of leafing.

Does Your Grandfather Clock Need a Makover?

This oak grandfather clock had been in my clients family for a while. It didn't really fit the décor of her fabulous study. You can see how we transformed her study ceiling. We were able to transform her clock while waiting for the ceiling layers to dry. I used my favorite bonding primer/basecoat in black. This product is called Bondago. It's made by a company called Perfetto. It's a very high quality primer that can be used as a basecoat as well. It goes on smooth and levels nicely. Please don't confuse this product with the current trending wall paint that has the primer built in. That product is made for previously painted walls. Bondago is designed for furniture and cabinets not necessarily previously painted. The black is awesome but it also it comes in many different colors, even clear!

Often with black, we distress the edges, but this room had a more formal, grand feel. So we added gold high lights to the edges. It's truly hard to believe it's the same clock. It's like we dressed it in a little black cocktail dress with a touch of gold bling!



The process is the same as always. We taped off the glass and we lightly sanded the clock and wiped it down. We painted one coat of black making sure that we didn't miss anything.

The process moved quickly. Already looking great! You will love this paint!

 

I used a small foam bushed and lightly highlighted in gold all the architectural accents on the clock.

Black Interior Doors

One of my repeat clients recently inquired about painting a few of her interior doors black, but leaving the remaining trim white. I've seen that done before and knew it would look good. I thought it was worthy of publishing so that all of my visual followers could see it and imagine it in their own homes. She wanted a black distressed look, but since the doors were white it would have required extra layers to have "wood" show through instead of the white. So to mimic that look, we hi lighted  some of the edges with a sheer gold. It gives the same effect and was much more simple.

A pretty simple update, but oh how it really enhances the space! Another small update we did last year was her fireplace surround. Instead of a big white surround, we painted and glazed to mimic a rustic wood look. Again, it really warms up the space and make it's much more personal. It helps that she has a true eye for accessorizing!
